Are you planning a trip to Argentina and want to explore a different city and have a new experience? Have you considered visiting Rosario?
Rosario is the largest city in the province of Santa Fe and was founded in the mid-18th century as a stop on the Royal Road between Buenos Aires and Cordoba due to its strategic location.
It is considered the birthplace of the Argentine flag and is also where important figures such as Lionel Messi and Che Guevara were born. Although it is not widely explored by tourists, it is a city with a population of around 1.2 million.
After this brief overview, let me give you 7 reasons to include Rosario in your itinerary when visiting Argentina:
- Although it may not be a touristy city, it has a rich history and culture, with numerous museums and galleries. It is the third-largest city in Argentina (after Buenos Aires and Cordoba).
- It boasts over 1,700 gastronomic establishments, including bars, cafes, and restaurants. If you're a fan of ice cream, Rosario is known as the Capital Nacional del Helado Artesanal (National Capital of Artisanal Ice Cream).
- The cost of living is cheaper than Buenos Aires, for example, and therefore accommodation is more affordable.
- If you're interested in learning Spanish, Rosario is home to a school that combines the best of both worlds: reasonable prices and excellent quality! I studied at Spanish in Rosario and loved it. I learned a lot!
- Believe it or not, Rosario has beaches, and you can even take boats that will transport you to various islands near the coast in just 5 minutes, allowing you to enjoy the day on the waters of the Paraná River, which is remarkably beautiful.
- It has the highest amount of green space per capita, evident in the numerous parks and green areas throughout the city. Additionally, the tap water is potable, which is great.
- Access to other cities is very convenient, and it is even possible to take a train to Cordoba and Buenos Aires. It's a unique experience, and the ticket prices are very affordable (I paid ARS 1,700 in May/23 - equivalent to US$ 1.25 at the current exchange rate).
Furthermore, Rosario has many important tourist attractions such as the Monumento a la Bandera and a vibrant nightlife, especially in the Pichincha neighborhood.
It's important to note that it's better to stay in the central region, between Boulevard Oroño, Avenida Pellegrini, and the Paraná River coast, as it is not only closer to everything but also the safest area. Unfortunately, Rosario has issues with drug trafficking, which leads to other dangers, so it's best to avoid other parts of the city. Even though this central area is considered safer, it is essential to remain vigilant and only go out at night by car/Uber/taxi.
Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised by the city, its stories, and everything it has to offer! I took two Free Tours that were great and provided me with a broader understanding of the significance of this city that is often overlooked by tourists.
I was warmly welcomed, had wonderful moments, and that's why I recommend a visit to Rosario!
